While many travelers stick to the well-known cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam, the Netherlands has so much more to offer that often goes unnoticed. From historic landmarks to breathtaking nature reserves and one-of-a-kind overnight stays, this country is full of hidden gems beyond imagination. Whether you’re searching for adventure, history, or a peaceful escape, these seven destinations are my personal favorites and offer a glimpse into the Netherlands’ diverse landscapes and rich heritage.
Kiekkaaste – A Birdwatcher’s Paradise
Nestled along the Dutch-German border, Kiekkaaste is the Netherlands’ only birdwatching hut built on stilts over the water. To get there, you follow a wooden boardwalk that winds through the wetlands, surrounded by reeds and open tidal flats. As you walk along the planks, you’ll feel completely immersed in nature, with nothing but the sounds of birds and the wind around you. The boardwalk itself is part of the experience, making the final view from the hut even more special.
Once inside the hut, you’ll find small observation openings that offer a panoramic look over the Dollard tidal bay, providing the perfect vantage point to spot a variety of bird species. Whether you’re an avid birdwatcher or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, the hut offers a sheltered, quiet space to observe nature undisturbed.

Museum Klooster Ter Apel – Step Inside a Medieval Monastery
Step back into the Middle Ages with a visit to Museum Klooster Ter Apel, a beautifully preserved 15th-century monastery nestled in the countryside of Groningen. Once home to Augustinian monks, this historic site now serves as a museum that tells the story of religion, medicine, and daily life in medieval times. Walking through the stone corridors, their beautifully preserved chapel, and the monastery’s garden, it’s easy to imagine the monks who once lived here.
Just behind the monastery, you can find Kloosterbos, a peaceful forest perfect for a quiet stroll after exploring the museum. With its old trails and its quiet atmosphere, it’s easy to forget the daily hustle and bustle of street life and enjoy nature at its finest.
You can find more information about them on their website: Museum Klooster Ter Apel.

Capcabin in Odoorn – A Forest Hideaway
For a truly unique stay, the Capcabin in Odoorn offers a peaceful getaway in the middle of nature. This beautifully designed, sustainable wooden cabin blends modern comfort with a minimalist aesthetic, making it the perfect place to disconnect and recharge. Wake up to an astonishing view of rolling fields and dense forests, a sight that feels almost magical in the morning light. Spend your days exploring the surrounding hiking and cycling trails, or simply relax on the terrace and fire up the barbecue for an evening meal in the fresh air.
As night falls, cozy up by the wood burner with a good book or roast marshmallows, letting the warmth and crackling fire complete the experience. Whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or with family, this hidden retreat is an unforgettable escape into nature.

Burcht Wedde – A Castle Steeped in History
Next on the list, and one of our favorite places to visit: Burcht Wedde. This historic castle, dating back to the 14th century, has a rich and fascinating past. Over the centuries, it has served as a noble residence, a military stronghold, and more recently, a unique children’s hotel. Because of this transformation, you’ll still notice child-friendly attributes throughout and outside of the castle.
Nowadays, Burcht Wedde is open to the public, offering guided tours that take you through its rooms and share the stories of its past. The castle is also available for private events, such as weddings, making it a truly special venue. After exploring the castle, you can unwind with a drink in the beautiful garden, enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

Wandelgebied Ter Borg – A Nature Walk Among Highland Cattle
Tucked away in the province of Drenthe, Wandelgebied Ter Borg is one of the most untouched nature reserves in the Netherlands. This vast landscape of heathlands and forests is home to free-roaming Highland cattle and flocks of grazing sheep. With just a few old farmhouses and a peaceful rural setting, it’s one of the most picturesque places in the Netherlands.
The best way to explore the area is on foot, following the winding trails that lead through open fields and shaded woodlands. Each season brings something new—purple heather in late summer, misty mornings in autumn, and crisp air in winter—making it a destination worth visiting year-round.

Treehouse in Drenthe – Sleep Among the Treetops
For a childhood dream come true, the treehouse in Drenthe offers the unique experience of sleeping high among the treetops. This cozy retreat is perfect for nature lovers, featuring a rustic wooden design, snug interior, a wood-burning stove, and stunning views of the surrounding forest. Wake up to the sound of birds and enjoy your morning coffee on the private balcony—an experience you won’t forget. Whether you’re seeking a romantic getaway or a fun family adventure, this charming hideaway lets you embrace the magic of sleeping in the trees.
The area around the treehouse is also full of things to explore. You can go hiking or biking through the nearby forests, visit the Drents-Friese Wold National Park, or check out the ancient Hunebedden (megalithic tombs). It’s a great place to relax and have fun.

Knuppelpad – A Walk Over Water
For a truly unique walking experience, head to the Knuppelpad, a 750-meter wooden boardwalk that winds through the marshlands of ‘t Roegwold. About 6,000 years ago, this area was covered with forest, but today, it’s a rapidly developing marshland. The boardwalk offers stunning views of the wetlands, especially during sunrises and sunsets, making it a great spot for photography. Midway through, there’s a bench and an observation point to rest and enjoy the surroundings.
